As some of you know, the adventure game Oceanhorn by Cornfox & Brothers has been released recently and the reception has been just amazing! It's a great privilege to appear on the same soundtrack with legendary composers Nobue Uematsu and Kenji Ito. I spent two years composing music for the game and I thought I'd share some thoughts about the process.
The first thing I want to do is thank the people involved. The whole process has been one of the biggest learning experiences of my life. Heikki Repo, the designer of the game is one of the most creative people I've ever met and it was fantastic to work with him. We've known each other for about 15 years or more, so that helps with the communication of course, but still the whole process was very effortless and rewarding and a big thanks for that goes to Heikki and his ability to express what he wants very clearly. And maybe we also shared a similar vision about what the soundtrack should sound like. I also want to thank the amazing musicians that helped me make the music come alive. When working with mostly midi-instruments the input of one or two great musicians can have a tremendous impact on the final result. So here are the guys who helped me out:
Päivi is a dear friend of mine and an amazing musician. She's responsible for the violins on the Oceanhorn-tunes. The whole midi-orchestra came alive instantly as we recorded her violin on the tracks. You should check out her solo-stuff, it's fantastic:
If you've heard some amazing clarinet or bass clarinet -stuff on the Oceanhorn-tracks, that's Lauri. It was so easy to work with him. I just sung how I wanted him to interpret the melodies once and he picked up on it instantly. He has the skill set of a classical musician and the flexibility of a folk musician, I love it! About the future
I'm exited about the fact that there has been discussion about the release of Oceanhorn-soundtrack. I feel that the soundtrack for the game is something special and I'm glad that the guys at Cornfox share my feelings. I hope I can say something certain about this soon. Also there's been talk about a sequel for Oceanhorn. I hope to be a part of that production also. I'll keep you guys informed.
